GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO BAIT.

LET’S CATCH SOME FISH.

HALIBUT

BAG LIMIT: 2 PER DAY, 4 PER YEAR

We often come across Halibut from May to October in Kodiak. They’re a popular, lean, white fish with a sweet taste that’s not too overpowering. Each flake is firm and tender, with a delicious aroma once it’s finished cooking. Known for their size, Kodiak Halibut typically range from 25 to 50 pounds and 100 to 200 pounds or more. They tend to spend their time at around 100 to 200 feet at the sea bottom. Your fishing pole will tell you when you catch one of these bad boys.

LINGCOD

BAG LIMIT: 2 PER DAY, SEASON LASTS FROM JULY TO DECEMBER

When a Lingcod comes your way, you’ll know it. They live around the reefs and don’t take kindly to charters. These predators can surpass 80 pounds and grow over 60 inches long. With their sizable mouths and knife-like teeth, you might think we’d avoid them. However, they have delicious, lean, white meat, a flaky texture, and a great flavor that’s ideal for frying.

KING SALMON (CHINOOK)

BAG LIMIT: 2 PER DAY, NO YEARLY LIMIT IN THE SALTWATER

King Salmon spend a lot of time in the Kodiak Island area, especially in the summer. This type of fish is the biggest of all Pacific Salmon, making them extra desirable (and tasty to boot). King Salmon contains large amounts of heart-healthy Omega-3 fatty acids, as well as a delicious flavor. These mighty Kings are especially known for their power and endurance and are one of the angler’s most sought-after species. Trolling up a King Salmon is a whirlwind and will make a great addition to your freezer.

YELLOWEYE ROCKFISH

BAG LIMIT: 1 PER DAY, INCLUDED IN THE DAILY ROCKFISH LIMIT

Once we get past 200 feet, we’ll start to see some Yelloweye Rockfish. They’re the most famous rockfish species in the area due to their massive size, some growing to 36 inches long, making Yelloweye rockfish one of the largest rockfish species. They are brightly colored with orange and red, which make them easy to distinguish. Yelloweye Rockfish have an irresistible, flaky texture and somewhat sweet taste.

SILVER SALMON (COHO)

BAG LIMIT: 2 TO 5 PER DAY, NO YEARLY LIMIT

We see Silver Salmon in the midst of summer, right around the last week of July and especially near the second half of August. They stick around up until the final week of September. Most Kodiak Silver Salmon are seven-pounders, but they can be as much as 16 pounds. Fresh-from-the-sea Silver Salmon are perfect for your smoker during the summer, with a mild taste the whole family will love.

BLACK ROCKFISH

BAG LIMIT: 3 PER DAY

Kodiak’s rocky ocean floor is home to Black Rockfish of all sizes. These fish gather in larger schools close to the rugged ocean floor, but once a feeding frenzy is triggered, they rise closer to the surface making them a quick catch. Their flavor is similar to Yelloweye Rockfish, white flaky meat that’s mildly sweet.

PACIFIC GREY COD

BAG LIMIT: NO LIMIT PER DAY

Pacific Grey Cod is the secret ingredient to most restaurants’ fish and chips. This fish has been in demand lately for those seeking a freezer restock. Once filleted, there might not be a lot to salvage. However, you can catch as many as you want.
